Discover the secrets of The Weyborne Estate.

Meet another side of The Weyborne Estate. Wayward No.1.
Curious, unconventional and willing to take a different path.

Made from fruit grown in Diddy Field, our smallest vineyard plot at nearly 1,000 ft above sea level. With no barrel fermentation, nine months’ elevage on the lees in tank and an extraordinary five years of bottle ageing, these wines are a different expression of our South Downs terroir.

The result? Two wines with the same sense of place, but very different personalities.

Wayward No.1 Brut 2020
86% Chardonnay | 14% Pinot Noir
Elegant, vibrant and finely balanced, with pink grapefruit, pear, honey and brioche.

Wayward No.1 Demi-Sec 2020
86% Chardonnay | 14% Pinot Noir
Luscious, ripe and full of summer fruit, with honey, apple, pear and tropical notes, lifted by a sherbet-like acidity.

To strive. To seek. To find. And never to yield.

Wayward No.1.
Just 1,000 individually numbered bottles of each are available.

Our award-winning sparkling wine takes its name from Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s The Ballad of Oriana, found in the library of Blackdown Park, honouring both his literary legacy and his enduring connection to The Weyborne Estate.

Tennyson was a neighbour and friend of the family, and he found inspiration in the surrounding landscape of the South Downs. Today, our vines grow across those same hillsides.

It feels fitting, then, that a wine born from this land should carry a name rooted in its history.

Oriana, a little piece of Tennyson’s story, captured in a glass.

A sense of place, captured in a glass.
The character of The Weyborne Estate begins beneath our feet.

Our vineyard sits 190 metres above sea level, where elevation, exposure and a distinctive mix of clay, greensand and chalk come together.

The high, south-facing slopes provide natural drainage and help reduce frost risk, while the cool maritime climate and elevation allow the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly.

Beneath the estate, the source of the River Wey rises from an ancient aquifer, its spring waters flowing through the landscape and giving life to the gardens and vineyards.

This is the terroir of The Weyborne Estate.

Not just the soil, but the elevation, water, climate and landscape that surround it.

And now, expressed in our Oriana 2022 Vintage Brut, where Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier come together to capture the character of this unique place.

From the land, to the vine, to the glass.

Before there were vines, there was the landscape.

At 190 metres above sea level, The Weyborne Estate sits within the Blackdown landscape at the highest point of the South Downs National Park.

Its story stretches back centuries. The estate was established in 1600, with the historic manor built by the influential Yaldwyn family in 1640.

Beyond the vineyard lies Black Down, a landscape of ancient tracks, heathland and sweeping views across West Sussex. At its southern edge stands the Temple of the Winds, a place long associated with Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

Looking out across the Weald and towards the distant sea, Tennyson famously wrote of:

“Green Sussex fading into blue.”

It is a landscape that has inspired people for generations.

In 2007, the first vines were planted here, beginning a new chapter in the story of this remarkable place.

The landscape remained.

The vines simply gave it another way to speak.

The countdown is on. Harvest is well underway and will be completed this week.

After an incredible summer of sunshine, the vines are ready for their final grapes to be gathered at The Weyborne Estate.

It’s the busiest and most anticipated time of year, as another vintage begins to take shape.

In the coming days, the last bunches will be picked and begin their journey from vine to bottle.

Every bottle begins here.

A vineyard where the landscape, history and wine are quietly intertwined.

From the sweeping views at 190 metres above sea level and the gardens, to the historic house and the wines themselves, a place with a story to tell.

Named after Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s The Ballad of Oriana, our top cuvée carries a little of the estate’s literary history into every bottle, a fitting name for a place that has long inspired creativity.

We welcomed friends from across the wine trade, press and media to Blackdown Park, beginning with glasses of Oriana Golden Spur before setting out across the Estate.

Through the vines, beneath the South Downs sky, we tasted grapes straight from the plant with harvest just weeks away, a glimpse of the vintage still taking shape.

Then, at The Bathing House, came the reveal. The biggest launch yet.

Oriana 2022 Vintage Brut.
Wayward No.1 Brut.
Wayward No.1 Demi-Sec.

Oriana remains at the heart of The Weyborne Estate. But Wayward opens the door to something different: a little more curious, a little more unexpected, and an opportunity to explore another side of our South Downs personality.

Born from the exceptional 2020 vintage, just 1,000 individually numbered bottles of each Wayward wine exist. To unveil them for the first time, here at the Estate, was a moment we won’t forget.

We ended the day high above the vines at the Diddy Field viewing platform, glasses of Wayward No.1 Demi-Sec in hand, looking out across the landscape that shapes every bottle.

From the vineyard to the glass, it was a day of discovery, and a glance at what lies ahead.

Because at The Weyborne, we believe in one simple philosophy:

To strive, to seek, to find and never to yield.

Oriana will always be our heart.

But sometimes, it’s good to be a little Wayward.
